Yes, traditional materials!

So happy to see an actual on canvas in the fine art section.

You did an amazing job on the fur, especially the face, with great colours. I'd like to have seen more of the wolf! The background could do with more defining/another layer as I can see the canvas and it looks unfinished.

StudioGiselle responds:

Thank you Bryony. I agree that the background could need more refining. I am practicing wet on wet technique with acrylics and finding it quite difficult. I don't have much time to blend the colors before they dry. I think at this point I will try to use more layers to achieve the results I'm looking for.

Few minor points, but very realistic.

Proportion is a bit off (between eyes - face is too thin, back line, right shoulder, or lack of), although its tricky drawing from photos because they create an illusion of proportions that real life doesn't. Assuming you're using a photo. Also I'm really unsure as to what's going on with her chest?

I am, of course, being highly critical here, that's just how I review and I wouldn't review you if you weren't very good anyways. Hair is very difficult, looking rather limp here but it looks like that's just the model, the attention to detail there is great. You definitely have awesome shading skill with pencil, I do love the contrasts within the shading that give it a very definitive 3D effect, especially where you've gone really dark. Go even darker and bolder with your shading! I also think you could transfer those skills into watercolour really well.

rickygonza responds:

thanks for reviewing Bryony. Drawing real stuff is some what difficult but what she is holding against her chest is a robe or cloth like thing. it was white in the picture which didnt really show any shading that i could do.i havent really tried water colors out to do portraits but thanks for the advice im Glad you like it and gave it an 8 =].

I don't usually like stuff like this.

But this has a simplicity that I find very calming.

HolyPeanuts responds:

Thanks man!

Loving the colours

I beg to differ, the shirt is my favourite part. Keep pushing yourself and you'll get there. Maybe use a smaller brush so you can get more precise and really improve on your accuracy. Paying finer attention to detail will also help smooth it out and get a more realistic finish. It's also nice to see something different in the art portal!

Fullmetal-Animator responds:

I suppose it is highly stylized. Although that was my intention it probably isn't to everyone else's taste. ^^;
Thanks for the tips.

Fantastic use of colour

And everyone underestimates the power of a sharpie! You're very skilled, would have been nice to see more l/d colour variety so you can really bring out the design.

conundrummer responds:

Thanks I appreciate it. Actually, the limited color range was partially intentional and partially as a result of my lacking any other colors.

Ok, I'm fucking jealous.

I haven't (or anyone other student i know) a hope in hell when it comes to chalk/charcol media. Seriously, it's a complete smudged up mess and I hate seeing it used. But this gives me HOPE. The proportions are lovely and the l/d balance is perfect, this may be your contrast editing (but I don't blame you for that as the balance is hard to get and harder when you're scanning something in). Also the hair is fabulous so I'd like to have seen this more in the bottom left.

toche thanks for the great review XD

Cool style

I really like the shape and transparency between the buildings in the foreground and background, but I think the text would be better much smaller and wider instead of tall and underlined as it takes away from the picture and on top on all the lens flare it becomes overbearing.

Tombstoned666 responds:

hey cheers mate.....i see what you mean about the txt, thanks for the crit,
i love your Growing peice thats bad ass XD

It makes me think of purgatory

Almost looks as if the clouds are closing in on this solitary performer. I really like the blending between the sky and ground and the clouds are very well done. Could do with a bit more refinement or more colour.

RPGsrok responds:

I tend to think of him as meditating. Glad the blending of the clouds turned out well to you. Personally I like the monochromatic scheme I'd come up with, and I'm not too sure what you mean by refinement (feel free to pm me if you care to elaborate). Glad you liked it!

Cool

Really, really nice colours here - although I'm not sure if that's a road or a river so it could use more definition. Lovely strokes as well, what did you use?

Stellarbird responds:

Thanks!~

It's a road, and yeah I just noticed i left out any median lines or cracks to distinguish it, so I might go back and change that.

I used Corel Painter 11 with a Wacom tablet.

:)

Cool idea, and I like your line style. Also good to see someone combining the figure and surrealist objects in the same piece. Would be nice to see some more definition between light/dark to bring out the boy from blending into the tree.

Pohmme-d-adham responds:

Thanks for your review and your critique as well. I'm actually planning to add some light/shadows, but for that, I need several plates of copper. And time. It's not as simple as drawing with pencil or ink. Unfortunately time is rare atm, but I will try to work on that piece, for sure!
